This project aimed to transform a twenty-year-old, lackluster powder room into a stunning space that would make any guest feel pampered. The design challenge with the cramped L-shaped space was creating a dynamic ceiling that would give the occupant a sense of scale and intimacy. An even more significant challenge was figuring out how to accomplish this feat as a solo DIY project. The intricate trim work and other details required a complete gutting of the finishes down to the bare slab and studs.
To design the geometry of the frustum (truncated pyramid) ceiling, I needed to conduct some research, revisiting my days in geometry class. I also needed to develop innovative solutions to engineer a strong yet lightweight ceiling shell that one person could move and install. Once the ceiling was in place, everything else fell into place more easily. The painstaking details, such as the beveled mirror and quarter-round with metallic paint, were worth the effort. In the end, the result was a carefully executed space that was visually pleasing and provided a comfortable experience for the occupant.
